Why this matters now

Gaming is no longer “just play.” It is where youth culture, digital safety, education, identity and regulation meet.

Young people need safer participation, better education, stronger community standards, cybersecurity awareness, privacy-conscious age assurance, trusted local partners and programmes that speak the language of gaming culture.

The UK Online Safety Act requires platforms to protect children online, including the use of highly effective age assurance for harmful or age-restricted content.

Australia’s under-16 social media restrictions came into effect on 10 December 2025, requiring age-restricted platforms to take reasonable steps to prevent under-16s from creating or keeping accounts.

Roblox has introduced age checks for communication features, including facial age estimation and ID verification, with communication limited by age groups unless users become trusted connections. Apple and Google are also moving toward age-signal infrastructure: Apple offers child-safety developer tools including Declared Age Range, while Google Play has introduced an Age Signals API to help developers support age-related legal compliance.
